Amy Bambenek

Head Coach Amy Bamebenk concluded her 11th season at the lead of the program in the fall of 2019. The Seahawks finished 14-15 with a roster that included seven newcomers to the program. Senior Kendall Bender was named second-team All-CAA and finished among UNCW's all-time leaders in attack percentage and blocks..

The Seahawks went 15-12 and 8-8 in the conference in 2018 while standout Maddy Kline earned third-team All-CAA honors. UNCW earned its first CAA tournament berth since 2015 with a dramatic 3-2 win over Elon as the Phoenix held a 2-0 lead before the Seahawks rallied to win the final three sets. UNCW never trailed in any of the three final sets.

UNCW knocked off a Power 5 program for a fourth consecutive season as the Seahawks topped Virginia in 2018. The Seahawks won back-to-back in-season tournaments, sweeping the Hoya Invitational and the Jefferson Cup..

in 2017, Brynn Montgomery was named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie team after stepping into the starting setter position as a freshman and recording 6.25 assists per set.

In 2016, UNCW finished Bambenek's eighth season with a record of 17-11 highlighted by a season sweep of rival College of Charleston and a road win over NC State. The Seahawks featured Nicole Lott, who finished her career among UNCW's all-time leaders in kills, attacks and digs. Lott was named first-team All-CAA for the second straight season and was a four-time All-CAA performer during her career.

Bambenek brought the Seahawks from the cellar of the Colonial Athletic Association to the NCAA tournament after guiding the Seahawks to their first-ever CAA tournament championship in 2015.

The Seahawks posted their third consecutive 20-win season and qualified for the conference championship tournament for the third straight season. UNCW had not qualified for the league’s tournament between 2001 and 2012.

The following accomplishments are from the 2015 season:

  • Went 2-1 versus ACC, all on the road
  • First time posting 20-win campaigns for three straight seasons
  • UNCW concluded the historic season ranked 58th in the final NCAA RPI report
  • The Seahawks posted a record of 7-6 versus top-100 RPI teams
Statistically, UNCW continued to excel at the net with a strong blocking game. The Seahawks ranked ninth nationally, averaging 2.93 blocks per set and 10th in total blocks with 340. UNCW also ranked third in the NCAA limiting opponents to a meager .142 hitting average.

Meredith Peacock ranked amongst the national leaders in both Blocks per set (20th, 1.4) and total blocks (14th, 162).

Bambenek enters the 2016 season with an all-time record of 108-106 and is second on UNCW’s all-time wins list, trailing only Kathy McDaniel (262-194), who led the Seahawks from 1985 through 1998.

Seahawk Volleyball continued its upward trajectory in 2014 with its second 20-win season and Colonial Athletic Association semifinal appearance in Bambenek’s sixth season at the lead of the program.

UNCW posted a 21-11 record overall and finished with a 10-6 mark in the CAA. The 10 wins in conference play marked the second straight season the program set a new conference-win record. The Seahawks topped Delaware in the first round of the CAA tournament before bowing to top-seed College of Charleston in five sets in the semifinals.

Middle blocker Meredith Peacock was a first-team All-CAA selection and was also named AVCA East Coast Region Honorable Mention. Peacock ranked fifth in the nation with a conference-leading 1.53 blocks per set and was sixth in the NCAA with a CAA-high 178 total blocks.

The Seahawks placed three on the All-CAA teams with Morgan Kline and Sarah Kelly joining Peacock on the third and all-rookie teams, respectively. Kline also was named to the All-Academic team.

UNCW enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history in 2013, winning three in-season tournaments and posting 20 victories for just the ninth time in the program’s 41-year history. The Seahawks finished third in the CAA standings with a then school-record eight league victories and made their first CAA Tournament appearance since 2000, knocking off William & Mary in the first round before falling to Northeastern.

Individually, senior Christi Laite earned First-Team All-CAA honors, becoming the first UNCW player in 20 seasons to earn the distinction. Laite was also recognized for her work in the classroom as she became the first Seahawk to be named CAA Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year for volleyball. Sophomore Meredith Peacock and freshman Nicole Lott were also recognized as both players garnered Second-Team All-CAA distinction while Lott was also named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.

The 2012 campaign saw UNCW record double-digit wins for the third time in four seasons under Bambenek as the team posted victories over state foes Campbell, High Point and North Carolina Central as well as Colonial Athletic Association foes George Mason, James Madison and William & Mary. Laite earned Second-Team All-CAA recognition for the second consecutive season while Laite and three other players garnered All-Tournament Team recognition a total of six times during the regular season.

The Seahawks enjoyed a successful inaugural campaign under Bambenek in 2009 as the team posted its highest win total since 1996 and its most CAA victories since 2002. The team also captured its third in-season tournament title in as many seasons with a victory at the Davidson Wildcat Classic.

The 2010 season saw the Seahawks post victories over in-state rivals Campbell, Elon and North Carolina A&T. Individually, three players earned All-Tournament Team honors a total of four times while five returning players set new personal career highs in more than 10 different statistical categories.

The 2011 campaign produced the Seahawks’ highest Colonial Athletic Association win total in 24 seasons, highlighted by victories over then league-leading James Madison and a sweep of William & Mary for the first time in program history. UNCW’s strong showing in league play was rewarded as Laite earned Second-Team All-CAA distinction, becoming the first UNCW player since the 2003 season to earn all-conference accolades.

Bambenek, 42, came to the Port City after eight seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at George Washington University, where she played a key role in the development of the Colonials’ program in the nation’s capital.
